Military families experience a number of life stressors, such as frequent geographical moves, long periods of separation within the family, geographic isolation from extended family support systems and deployments to high-risk areas of the world. While children and youth in military families experience all the same developmental and motivational trajectories as their civilian counterparts, they must also contend with more unusual developmental pressures and stressors placed on them by the unique demands of military life. The effects of the military life on families and children are beginning to be recognized and characterized more fully. Understanding the unique concerns of children and youth from military families and mobilizing specific resources to support them are critical for meeting the health care needs of this population. Children and youth from Canadian military families are a unique population.

Peacekeeping missions have been a source of immense pride for Canadians since the country took on its first major role in an international emergency during the Suez Canal Crisis. To date, Canada has been a part of every major peacekeeping operation, with peacekeepers holding a distinguished place in the armed forces. There are a host of reasons the Canadian military is having trouble recruiting females in general, let alone those who have the right skill sets to be deployed on these difficult missions.
In , retired Supreme Court justice Marie Deschamps released a series of damaging reports that uncovered a highly sexualized culture in the armed forces where harassment and misconduct were often ignored or covered up. Many, including Deschamps, have said that little progress has been made in making military careers a more welcoming choice for women. Additionally, given their limited numbers, women already serving in the Forces face intense pressure, having to be deployed more often overseas which can impact both their personal lives and professional trajectories.
Gender diversity amongst Canadian peacekeepers and more broadly, the Canadian military, is critical to ensuring successful missions on a number of different levels. Attracting more women broadens the range, experience and number of potential people to draw from, enabling the military to choose the best recruits — regardless of gender. Instead, small battles are fought in highly populated areas. With this, peacekeeper and military roles have shifted, with members participating in combat while also undertaking relationship-building roles in the community, contributing to more long-term stabilization efforts.
Modern conflict zones reflect situations where having women and men with many different skills — from conducting combat operations, to working in a diplomatic capacity and providing humanitarian support — makes success more likely. According to the U. The presence of deployed females can also provide a greater sense of security to local populations. With the identification of a toxic culture in the Canadian military coming to light in , actionably changing this perception should be the highest priority of the military.

When 40 Canadian Rangers swung into action in northern Quebec this week to set up heated tents for COVID screening and conduct other tasks in their local communities due to the pandemic, they formed the most visible military response to the crisis to date. OTTAWA — When 40 Canadian Rangers swung into action in northern Quebec this week to set up heated tents for COVID screening and conduct other tasks in their local communities due to the pandemic, they formed the most visible military response to the crisis to date.
The Rangers were mobilized in response to a request for assistance from provincial authorities, the first to the federal government because of COVID Thousands more troops are standing by in case it isn’t the last. But what exactly can the Canadian Armed Forces bring to bear in a fight with a pandemic? And how will commanders decide how to use troops who, once committed, could find themselves infected, or quarantined, and taken out of the fight? Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan announced last month that the military was mobilizing up to 24, troops so it would be able to respond to COVID as well as floods and forest fires that have become commonplace in the spring in recent years.
Equipment is being gathered at key military bases such CFB Borden in Ontario, but the majority of troops have been ordered to self-isolate to ensure they are clean of COVID — to preserve their own health and so they don’t infect those they are tasked with helping. Warships have also been ordered to wait off each coast until called into action for the same reason: to ensure their crews remain clean of COVID And while aircrew continue to transport equipment and supplies here and to missions overseas, only essential staff are working.
While that may include helping enforce quarantines, it is more likely to entail helping with transportation, building shelters and facilities, setting up communications and some medical support. They are not designed for providing significant augmentation to the medical services of the country. Sajjan indicated last week that the level of support will be based on individual requests from provinces and territories for assistance.
Where military commanders are expecting to need large numbers of troops is to deal with spring floods and wildfires.

Canadian military police have launched an investigation after a soldier was allegedly beaten unconscious by a sergeant during a recent mission in Europe. The private, a member of the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment, was admitted to hospital after a beating that took place during off hours, sources told Postmedia. The Canadian Forces confirmed the soldiers involved were in Germany at the time of the incident, but they were supporting Canadian troops operating in Bulgaria as part of a U.
Doug MacNair said in an email. Canadian Forces police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault, but the military noted it cannot comment further on the details until the investigation is completed. The designated assistant is an officer who has been assigned to help the private. Sources say the alleged attack is not believed to be related to an incident the day before that took the life of another soldier from Petawawa, who was also taking part in Exercise Swift Response.
